Gareth Bale, Wales' most celebrated footballer, has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 33. The former winger, who played for Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid during his illustrious career, has decided to hang up his boots after a glittering career.
Bale, who was capped 100 times by Wales, won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid, as well as three La Liga titles and one Copa del Rey. He also played a key role in Wales' run to the semi-finals of the 2016 European Championship.
In a statement released on his social media channels, Bale said: "Today, I am announcing my retirement from club and international football. This decision has been incredibly difficult, but I know the time is right to bring my playing career to an end.
