Carlos Sainz in Talks with Mercedes Over 2025 Contract
Negotiations Underway, but Issue with Future Drive
Talks held in Saudi Arabia; Sainz's future beyond Ferrari uncertain
Carlos Sainz and Mercedes are reportedly engaged in discussions regarding a potential contract for the 2025 Formula 1 season. However, the negotiations have encountered a snag, as Sainz is currently without a confirmed drive for the 2024 campaign.
According to a report in the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sainz's representatives met with Mercedes officials during last weekend's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix to discuss the possibility of joining the German team in 2025. Mercedes is believed to have offered Sainz a two-year contract, which would encompass the upcoming period of regulatory changes in Formula 1 in 2026.
Sainz's current contract with Ferrari expires at the end of the 2024 season. The Spanish driver has expressed his desire to remain with the iconic Italian team, but Ferrari has yet to offer him a new deal. Nico Rosberg, the 2016 Formula 1 world champion, has advised Sainz to secure a drive with Mercedes as soon as possible.
Sainz's potential move to Mercedes would represent a significant development in the Formula 1 driver market. The team has been dominant in recent years, winning eight consecutive constructors' championships from 2014 to 2021. Mercedes is expected to be a major contender for the championship in 2023 and beyond.
