Last updated on July 4th 2024 at 450pm London time

The UK is set to go to the polls on July 4th 2024, with polls opening at 7am and closing at 10pm. The results of the election will be declared throughout the night, with the first results expected to come in from around 11pm.

There are 650 constituencies in the UK, each of which elects one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons. The party with the most MPs will form the next government.

The 2024 election is taking place against a backdrop of significant change, with the UK having left the European Union and the COVID-19 pandemic having had a major impact on the country.

The main parties contesting the election are the Conservative Party, the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and the Green Party.

You can follow the live results of the 2024 election on BBC News online, BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds and BBC Radio 5 live.
